The Election Process
In term 4 each year, the Year 6
students are given the opportunity to run for the Student Council Executive
for the up coming year. The year 6/7 classes spend time discussing the
qualities of a good leader.
The selection criteria are as follows:
-
Growth in maturity during Year 6
-
Ability to self-manage in a variety of situations
-
Ability to represent the school in a positive light
-
Demonstration of leadership skills, or the potential to
develop these
-
Accepting and respectful of
differences.
-
Ability to listen to others openly.
-
Ability to display empathy towards
others.
-
Knowing right from wrong and be
willing to make a stand.
-
The ability to stand apart from
his/her peers.
Students who would like to stand for
the positions and believe they have the required skills then nominate.
Nominated students have about two
weeks to prepare a speech, outlining why they believe they would make a
suitable member of the Student Council Executive. Students have the
opportunity to rehearse their speeches in front of their own classes before
presenting them to the entire upper school student body.
After every nominee has given their
speech, the Year 4 to 7 students receive a voting slip and they must vote
for both the female and male representative using the preferential voting
system.
The votes are then counted and the boy
and girl with the most votes become the school captains. The next two
highest polling boys and girls take up the remaining positions on the
Student council Executive.
